As scary as it may sound to some who have concerns over exposing themselves to the virus, the reality is that there are many people who still have to get on with their lives and move out.
Although current virus protections are in place citywide, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Department of Public Health says that moving is technically “safe,” as long as residents follow best practices for social distancing, cleaning, and disinfecting.
If you or someone you know is in need of moving services, here are a few things to consider before getting ready to haul.
Virtual Tours
Since walking into other people's homes is not permitted right now, consider utilizing your local real estate specialist to conduct a virtual tour of the apartment or home you wish to visit. Once you're ready to sign the dotted line, personal inspections are allowed with some conditions. Only two people can inspect a property or unit at a time and must remain 6 feet apart while inside. In additon, they must be the actual tenants of future property and inspections must be reserved in advance.
Safety Precautions for Movers or Friends/Family
Most moving services are actively taking measures to protect themselves and your personal belongings by wearing safety masks and gloves. If you're going to use cardboard boxes, make sure to wipe down all boxes after use since the virus can stay active on cardboard for at least 24 hours.
Asking friends and family members to come over and help out isn’t explicitly forbidden under local restrictions, but the mayor’s orders restrict visits with friends and family members except when there is an “urgent need.”
Exercise Caution In Elevators
For those who may be moving into an elevated living space and require the assistance of an elevator, make sure to exercise extra caution. MIT professor Lydia Bourouiba tells The Atlantic that elevators in fact “pose the highest risk” of all shared residential spaces.
